FITRANA 2024

DONATE YOUR FITRANA 2024

One of the key obligations on Muslims during the Holy month of Ramadan is to donate Fitrana on or before the morning of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Fitrana is a small sum of money per person which is given prior to Eid Salah to enable those in need to celebrate the completion of the auspicious month and join in the festivities of Eid-ul-Fitr. Fitrana, also known as Zakat-ul-Fitr, is the sum of $15 per person and is compulsory for all Muslims regardless of age or status. The only individuals exempt from paying Fitrana are those who do not have over approximately 2kg of staple food in excess of their needs.

Fitrana can be paid during the Holy month of Ramadan as long as payment is made prior to the congregational prayers on the morning of Eid-ul-Fitr. Any payment submitted after Eid Salah is invalid.

THE PURPOSE OF FITRANA

Every Muslim is obliged to make a payment of Fitrana at the end of Ramadan as a token of their thankfulness to Allah (SWT) and all that He has given them. This payment ensures that all followers of Islam can celebrate Eid, the festival of breaking the fast, along with other Muslims around the world.

“The Prophet of Allah enjoined Zakat-ul-Fitr on those who fast to shield them from any indecent act or speech, and for the purpose of providing food for the needy.

It is accepted as Zakat for the one who pays it before the `Eid prayer, and it is Sadaqah for the one who pays it after the prayer.”
 Abu Dawood – Eng. transl. vol. 2, p. 421, no. 1605 – rated Sahih

FITRANA FAQs

WHEN MUST FITRANA BE PAID?

The time frame in which Fitrana must be paid is a relatively short period, beginning from sunset on the final day of fasting in the Holy month of Ramadan to just after sunrise on the following day at the beginning of Eid prayers. Payment, however, can be made before this period with companions of the Prophet (Sahabah) having paid Sadaqah-ul-Fitr days before the beginning of Eid.

Payment was opened up from the middle of Ramadan as word of the Qur’an travelled far and wide to ensure that Fitrana payments would be received by all beneficiaries on the day of Eid. Failure to make this payment before Eid prayers are performed is a sin which cannot be made up for.
